Welcome to Scotland
Y O U R I T I N E R A R Y
DAY ONE:
arrival at Edinburgh airport 11.10am, mcleanscotland
will meet you and transfer you by coach to a nice
Scottish pub, where lunch can be taken. We then
take a city tour by coach ending at the Castle. You
may visit here or wander along the Royal Mile. Free
time in our capital city, we will hold your luggage
until check in, in the coach.
The coach will meet you once again at
the Castle at 3.30pm,
transferring you to the Royal Scots Club.
Situated in one of Edinburgh’s finest Georgian
streets this is a rare combination, the charm of a
country house hotel with a cosy club atmosphere.
Founded in 1919 as a tribute to those who fell in
The Great War The Royal Scots Club is proud of its
heritage. Traditional values are very important.
Courtesy, personal service and warm hospitality are
at the very heart of the Club. The Douglas Room
has been booked for 5.30pm for your private
meeting. Following your meeting, this room is yours
again for a private dinner. After your
dinner, please accept our membership card of
THE SCOTCH MALT WHISKY ASSOCIATION
for you to enjoy the surroundings of the Leith club.
Enjoy your first evening in our
country, maybe sharing a dram or two at Leith?
DAY TWO:
After
a Full Scottish breakfast we meet you at the hotel
for a 9am departure to Tullibardine
distillery in Perthshire for 10am, where we
have a quick tour and visit. En route to Crieff we
will be making a courtesy stop in Perth, at the
Caithness Glass Centre, refreshment and rest rooms
available here. Just a wee stop as we pick up
another member of mcleanscotland staff’ Liz
McIntyre. The directly to the Famous Grouse
Whisky Distillery for 12 – 12.30 visit.
Once at the distillery you will be guided around
this amazing experience, before ending at the
restaurant for a special tasting: with
5 superb whiskies for
you to enjoy. As Scotland’s oldest
distillery, it has a long and colourful history!
From illicit stills and smugglers to today’s
Glenturret, which is still made the traditional way,
the tour will give you an insight on how this single
malt is produced. After
the Grouse, we head back to Edinburgh via a
different route. Liz is a new member of
our staff and has family in Pitlochry, which
is our route on the way back to Edinburgh, so she
will enlighten us with a few local notes
as we travel
through the glens and mountains of
Perthshire, with another stop, this time EDRADOUR
DISTILLERY. We then make our way south to
Perth, for a wonderful “pub meal” in the Foundry
Pub. This will be at your own expense as the
meal/drinks are not included within today’s
package. This is one of the best pubs in Perth and
the staff and locals are very friendly. It also has
an exceptional whisky display for even more drams if
you have the capacity! Liz works here also!
DAY THREE: A guided tour today to Rosslyn
Chapel. Its
construction began in 1446 and has since evoked
wonder and surprise with the beauty and intricacy of
its stonework. The chapel served as a family house
of worship through most of the 1500s, though the St
Clair's continued Catholicism after the Reformation
in 1560 led to considerable tensions with the Kirk.
The altars were finally destroyed in August 1592 and
the chapel fell into disuse. During their attack on
nearby Rosslyn Castle in 1650,
Cromwell's
troops used the chapel as stables, but left it
otherwise unharmed. Restoration was begun by James
St Clair in 1736, who reglazed the windows and made
the building weatherproof once more. More repairs
followed through the 1800s, and in 1861 the 3rd Earl
of Rosslyn restarted Sunday services at the chapel.
The baptistry and organ loft were added to the west
end in 1881. At the meeting of the South Aisle and
the Lady Chapel is the stunningly carved pillar
known as the apprentice pillar (pictured
above). It is said that the master mason was
instructed by Sir William St Clair to build a pillar
to match a drawing he had provided.
The master mason went to
Italy to study the original, and in his
absence an apprentice produced the
magnificent pillar on view today. The story
does not have a happy ending: the master
mason was so consumed with envy on his
return that he killed the apprentice with a
blow from his mallet. There are other
legends associated with Rosslyn Chapel's
links with the
Knights Templar
and the Masons. Sealed burial vaults below
the chapel are thought to contain the
remains of ten Barons of Rosslyn in their
full armour. But some believe these vaults,
or other parts of the chapel, may also
contain the Holy Grail, or the Ark of the
Covenant, or part of the actual cross on
which Christ was crucified.
